Two commands cover every trait: traits.equip_trait adds one, traits.remove_trait takes it away.

Turn cheats on first
Internal names, and what they cost you on console
Internal names are rarely the names you see in the game. Companion is EternalBond, Handy is TheKnack and Disruptive is trait_Rogue. Some carry a trait_ prefix and some do not, with no pattern you can work out from the display name.
Capitalisation does not matter. Spelling, underscores and spaces do: a space ends an argument, so a name printed with a space in the middle will not work as typed.
On PlayStation and Xbox the same commands are the only way to change a trait, because those platforms load no script mods, and testingcheats true switches Achievements and Trophies off for that save. The rule is on achievements and trophies, and the mod side of it on UI Cheats on console.
Changing the three personality traits
- In Live mode, type
cas.fulleditmode. Nothing appears; that is normal. - Shift-click the Sim and choose Modify in CAS.
- Edit traits, aspiration, age, body, walk style, occult status.
Personality traits that do have codes
A handful, mostly newer ones, work with traits.equip_trait like any other trait: trait_Competitive from Adventure Awaits, and trait_Mystical, trait_Plantlover and trait_Rogue from Enchanted by Nature. They are in the Personality traits table below.

Adventure Awaits adds a large group of Childhood Inspiration reward traits following the pattern trait_Reward_ChildhoodInspiration_<Name>, such as trait_Reward_ChildhoodInspiration_BeActive for Action-Packed Childhood. Only one guide lists the full set, so test the individual names rather than trusting them. The same guide notes they cost 100 aspiration points each.

Character values are stats rather than traits, so they take a different command. The traits they unlock still use traits.equip_trait.

Patterns only one guide records
Royalty and Legacy adds Dynasty perks listed as trait_DynastyPerk_Affinity followed by an affinity and a strength from 1 to 3, for twelve combinations. Only one guide records them, so treat that pattern as a lead rather than a documented command.
The same goes for the remaining Parenthood character-value traits: Compassionate, Argumentative, BadManners, GoodManners, Mediator, Irresponsible, EmotionalControl and Uncontrolled. Try them, but do not expect every one to land.
Occult ranks, powers, perks and curses are a separate system built on stats rather than traits. Those are on the occult cheats page, with the XP numbers for each rank.
Friendship, romance and sentiments between two Sims are not traits either. Set those with the relationship cheats.

- With weerbesu's UI Cheats mod, right-click the green Traits bar.
- Right-click a trait to remove it.
Create a Sim
- Right-click the confirm button to randomise a Sim.
- Name, traits and aspiration in one click. PC and Mac only.
Two limits, and when this arrived
Adding and removing traits has been in the mod since v1.25, and since v1.54 the add-trait menu covers Formative Moments too. Character value meters take any value from -100 to 100.
The three personality traits still go through cas.fulleditmode and Modify in CAS, and killing a Sim or setting a death type is not a documented feature of the mod at all, so that stays with the age and death cheats. The install guide covers the setup.

How do you remove a trait?
Run the same line with traits.remove_trait in place of traits.equip_trait. The internal name is identical.
Can UI Cheats add and remove traits?
Yes, on PC and Mac. Right-click the green Traits title bar in the Simology panel to add, and an individual trait to remove.
