The short version

What a visit to this site produces
ThingHere
Accounts and formsNone. There is nothing to sign in to and nothing to fill in.
AnalyticsGoogle Analytics 4, on the live site only. It counts page views and a few clicks.
AdvertisingNone. The site uses no ad network, remarketing, social widget or heatmap.
CookiesTwo, both set by the Google tag on this domain. They are listed below.
Stored in your browserOne value of our own: whether you picked the light or the dark theme.
HostingCloudflare Pages, which sees the requests your browser makes.
Sold or sharedNothing is sold. Analytics data goes to Google, who process it for us.

What the analytics tag records

The whole list, and what we do not do with it

Collected: the page viewed and its title, the referring page, the approximate location derived from your IP address, your device type, operating system, browser and screen size, the language your browser reports, and a randomly generated client id kept in a cookie.

That id is a number, not a name. We never learn who it belongs to, and nothing on this site asks you for anything that could tell us.

Not done: no advertising features, no Google Signals, no User-ID, no cross-site or cross-device tracking, no data sold or handed to anyone else, and no analytics at all in local development builds, where the tag is never rendered.

Google LLC processes the data for us, as our processor, under Google's data processing terms. Some of it may be processed on Google servers outside the EEA, covered by the standard contractual clauses in those terms.

Event-level data is kept for 2 months, which is the Google Analytics default, unless that setting is changed.

The two cookies

First-party cookies the Google tag sets on this domain
NameWhat it doesHow long
_gaTells one browser apart from another.Up to 2 years
_ga_RQ4RQ3ZTLQKeeps one visit together as a session.Up to 2 years
Where those two years come from

Two years is the current default for both cookies in Google Analytics 4. The Google tag refreshes the expiry on each visit, so an occasional reader never quite reaches it.

Neither cookie is read by us directly, and neither holds anything you typed. Clearing site data for this domain deletes both, and the site works exactly the same without them.

Switching analytics off

What still happens if you opt out

The pages load normally, because nothing here depends on analytics. Cloudflare still handles the request, as it has to in order to serve you the page at all.

What we store in your browser

More detail

The value holds one word, either "light" or "dark", and nothing that could identify you. It is not a cookie, so it is never attached to a request and we never see it. Set the toggle back to "system" and it is deleted; clearing site data for this domain removes it too.

Apart from the Google tag, every page here is plain HTML, CSS and a few lines of JavaScript that talk to nothing. The typefaces and the images come from this domain, so opening a page does not make your browser contact anyone else.

Hosting and server logs

What Cloudflare does with that

It processes the data to deliver the site, keep it available and protect it from abuse. We build no profiles from it and combine it with nothing else. The terms are in Cloudflare's own privacy policy.

Your data and your rights

What we can and cannot do for you

Laws such as the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation give you rights over personal data an organisation holds about you, including seeing it and having it deleted. A pseudonymous id can still count as personal data, so those rights apply here.

In practice we cannot look you up, because we never learn which id is yours and we hold nothing else about you. The quickest erasure is your own: clear this site's cookies, or use the opt-out add-on above. Write to us and we will answer, and pass on to Google anything only they can act on.

An email you send us is kept until the question is settled, and deleted sooner if you ask. This site is not aimed at children and asks nobody for their age, name or address.

Your browser's developer tools show every request a page makes and everything stored for this domain. You should find one document, its stylesheet, a font, some images, the Google tag and the two cookies above, and the theme key.
